The Drover’s Wives is a powerful visual performance that blends live music, video and photography, with contemporary dance to create a contemporary ’imagining’ of Australia fused with ideas of, location, isolation, celebration and occupation.
The Drover’s Wives is a powerful visual performance that blends live music, video and photography, with contemporary dance to create a contemporary ’imagining’ of Australia fused with ideas of, location, isolation, celebration and occupation.
As the sun sets out on a property, somewhere near town, the ‘ghost wives’ appear, and weave their story telling magic to an original music score composed and played live by award winning composer Iain Grandage.
The Drover’s Wives is a riveting re-telling of the Australian classic tale ‘The Drover’s Wife’ by Henry Lawson. Evocative visual imagery of the Australian bush landscape at it’s most breathtaking accompanies this stunning performance event.
After it’s critically acclaimed sell-out world premiere season at 2006 Perth International Arts Festival, the work was presented in 2007 to sell out audiences at the 9th China Shanghai International Artrs Festival and the 5th Beijing Dance Festival.
The Drover’s Wives available for touring from 2009
Sally Richardson’s The Drover’s Wives is a knockout..You could laud it for it’s polished production and fine design: Zoe Atkinson’s costumes; Andrew Lake’s set and lighting; Ashley de Prazer and Dank Micich ‘s video design;and Iain Grandage’s music..They all create vivid, beautiful and evocative images that could only suggest the Australian outback, but more than that, the show touches the heart.

"The Drover’s Wives; a groundbreaking world premiere…Steamworks under Sally Richardson’s expert direction proves itself up to the task. In collaboration with her talented team, she has created a multi-layered synergy or music, dance, adapted text and visuals that provides a compelling insight into our past - and present cultures….a stunningly performed and perfectly realised work of art…"
