GUI SHU (belong) Vision Residency PICA Perth

GUI SHU (BELONG) vision residency at Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts (PICA) from 5 - 11 November. Great to be working with leading Australian video artist Pilar Mata Dupont & Designer/film maker Ashley de Prazer supported by Performing Lines WA. Steamworks director Sally Richardson and the team, including dancer Natalie Allen, explored the potential for multi-screen installation and various approaches to use of projection in performance.

BORAK ARTS SERIES at OzAsia Festival

Staemworks Arts Director Sally Richardson and GUI SHU (BELONG) producer Jen Leys from Performing Lines WA head to Adelaide Oct 30 - Nov 4 for Borak Arts Series. Thid is the first time the South East Asian performing Arts Market will be held in Australia as part of OzAsia Festival 2018. Steamworks thanks the Australia Council for the Arts for their support.

Steamworks Arts presents new solo dance/theatre work #thatwomanjulia for Strut's program NEXT at Move Me Festival 2018.
#thatwomanjulia takes as its inspiration the transcripts of the parliamentary record, reportage and public commentary around the political life of Australia's first female Prime Minster, Julia Gillard. This powerful solo work by experienced co-creators Sally Richardson & Natalie Allen is a response to the terrible things we see and hear spoken about and to women in Australia, a response to the appalling sexism, misogyny and violence that is continually directed towards women at all levels of public and private life in this country.

ADAM 2018 Presentation for GUI SHU (belong)

Steamworks is delighted to announce we will be presenting a work in progress showcase of GUI SHU (belong) for ADAM (Asia Discovers Asia meeting) 2018 in Taipei, Taiwan. We are looking forward to working once again with our Taiwanese collaborators; Yenting Hsu, Tsiao-Tzu Tien & Yiching Liao, alongside the Australian team.

Arts Residency Fish Factory Creative Centre in Iceland

Steamworks Arts Director Sally Richardson takes up a month long residency at the Fish Factory Creative Centre in Stoovarfjorour, Iceland.
Sally will be researching, writing & filming while developing a range of current projects and works in progress. A focus of the residency will be solo practice & process, video experimentation, exploring landscape, the body, and its interaction with the environment.

Performing Asia + APAM 2018

Steamworks Director Sally Richardson is attending the Australian Performing Arts Market at the Powerhouse in Brisbane. She is participating in the Performing Asia program and also promoting Steamworks project in development GUI SHU (BELONG).
Sally is supported by project co-producers Performing Lines WA and the WA department of Local Government, Sport & Cultural industries.


Steamworks Arts showcases first stage of new project VOSS in MICROMOVE for Summer Nights at The Blue Room Theatre for FRINGEWORLD. Featuring Sally Richardson, Daisy Sanders, Joe Lui,supported by Humphrey Bower. This new project re-frames and reflects upon the Australian colonial cult of the explorer. Performances 13 & 14 February at 6.15pm

Circus Industry Forum 2018

Steamworks Arts Sally Richardson in her role as AD of MAXIMA was a recent guest of the Sydney Festival at the Circus Industry Forum held at Circus City in Parramatta. Sally participated in the two day event and spoke on the panel with Sue Broadway and John-Paul Zaccarini on 'Unpacking Form and Genre' in contemporary Circus.

2017 CAMD Executive Mentoring Program

Steamworks Director Sally Richardson is delighted to be working with McCarthy Mentoring as a mentor for the Council of Australian Museum Directors Executive Mentoring Program for aspiring leaders in 2017/18. She will be mentoring Leigh O'Brien, Director for the WA Museum in Geraldton.

ChinaSPAF 2017 & Wuzhen Theatre Festival

Steamworks was a selected Australian Performing Arts Company for CHINA SPAF 2017(Shanghai Performing Arts Fair). New works by Steamworks (Ghost:JHIH) along with MAXIMA (for FEARLESS) were featured alongside other Australian companies on the Australia Council Booth & at the formal presentation event. Artistic Director Sally Richardson was also a VIP guest as part of the Australian delegation to the Wuzhen Theatre Festival.

FEARLESS a success at the Summit

FEARLESS opened to a full house at the Boardwalk Theatre for the WA Regional Arts Summit in Mandurah. A hit with Summit audiences this re-developed production featured a cast of 16 artists and was conceived & directed by Steamworks Arts Sally Richardson for MAXIMA in a co-production with Mandurah Performing Arts Centre.

FEARLESS by MAXIMA to open WA Regional Arts Summit

FEARLESS, a circus theatre work being created by MAXIMA:Circus Beyond Limits will open the 2017 WA Regional Arts Summit at the Boardwalk Theatre in Mandurah on October 12. A co-production with Mandurah Performing Arts Centre , and involving a cast of over 20, this will be a production of scale and spectacle.
Steamworks Director and show creator Sally Richardson is excited about the collaboration with local companies and groups including Pulse Productions. "Combining shadow puppetry, clowning, visual theatre with circus we believe it will be a wonderful and entertaining show for the whole family".

SPEECHLESS Creative development

Steamworks Director Sally Richardson joined the creative team in Adelaide this week as staging consultant on the creative development of composer Cat Hope's new opera SPEECHLESS. The workshop co-produced by Vitalstatistix, Tura New Music and Decibel New Music Ensemble .

BUNDANON Residency Update

The Ghost:JHIH team has just completed a successful AIR residency at BUNDANON in NSW. Focusing on sound, vision and film experimentation, it was great to be able to bring some of the creative team together again, in partcular our sound artist/designer Hsu Yenting flying in from Taiwan. BIG Thanks to our 48 Ghost:JHIH 'legends' who through Pozible supported this valuable creative development opportunity.

2016 Strut Dance Seed Residency

Director Sally Richardson has been awarded at 2016 Seed Residency with Strut Dance (National Choreographic Centre)
The residency will see her working on a stage 2 of the cross-cultural collaboration Ghost - Jhih in April and November. The project is being supported by the Mandurah Performing Arts Centre

Asialink Residency in Taiwan

Sally Richardson heads off overseas to undertake a residency at Taipei Artist Village in Taiwan.
For three months she will be researching, writing exploring the tales,stories and traditions of'hungry'ghosts and the celebration of the Ghost Festival. She will also be collaborating with local dance/theatre artists.

Standing Bird 2 is now in rehearsal for our up coming Hong Kong season 5 - 8 November at infamous Hong Kong Fringe Club.
We welcome Mike Nanning and Alice Lee Holland to the team supporting the remount, and thank DCA WA for its Artflight funding support.

The Unknown Soldier receives Stage 2 support from Stages WA and is selected for PICA (Perth) Development Program in 2015
The creative team is Sally Richardson (writer/director), Zoe Atkinson (design), Cat Hope (composition), Francesca Smith (dramaturgy), and features actor Hayley McElhinney.

Sally Richardson returns to NAISDA (NSW) this October to complete her cultural leadership program (supported by the Australia Council Theatre Board)
Her students present 5 solos plus 1 on Saturday October 25.

Artist in Residence at NAISDA

Director Sally Richardson is currently artist in residence at NAISDA (NSW) as part of a program of skills development in cultural leadership funded by the Australia Council Theatre Board. She will be working with senior students on individual creative projects, and also undertaking cultural residency with elders on Elcho Island.
