We Are

Steamworks creates hybrid theatrical works which draw inspiration from the re-creation and adaptation of stories from life and art. We seek to to create intelligent, passionate and visceral performances.

Established in 2001 the company is led by Director Sally Richardson with each production developed around a collective of multi-disciplined artists including designers, performers, writers, composers and filmmakers. The result is challenging and relevant works that combine contemporary ideas with a powerful theatricality.

Our productions have garnered critical acclaim and have toured regionally, nationally and internationally. There is a desire to continually develop the possibilities of what contemporary inter-disciplinary theatre is and can be. To always be questioning and exploring performance languages, forms, voices and narratives, and seeking out opportunities to work with new people and processes.

Steamworks actively seeks to break down the boundaries between different art forms, from imagining events, exploring classic texts, to developing original multi-artform works. We want to shape an Australian performing arts culture that reflects our changing society while engaging with the region in which we live.

We are committed to collaborating with emerging and established Independent artists and companies, and championing the voice, presence and creativity of women artists.

People Say

..Claus has conquered, and she has made this solo work her own. She ably provided the sheer physical and emotional depth demanded by this full-length work. Much credit also goes to creator Sally Richardson, who has gathered together many of WA's leading performance artists in dance, film, theatre and music over the years to produce this world-premiere event

...It was just one of the many examples where Sally Richardson's clever direction is displayed and delivered. She is no stranger to captivating audiences from her humble beginnings in writing to theatre, puppetry, film, producing and directing with works presented on the international scale.
(Sandra Lee - SYN, Shanghai)

..this is largely Western Australian talent at its very best, a production that conjures up a magical live theatre experience every bit as good as Raoul by James Thierree
