Sally Richardson

Sally is the Director of Steamworks Arts.

She is an Australian director, writer, dramaturg, arts consultant and producer working across the performing arts. She is passionately committed to the creation of new Australian work and collaborating with other artists with a focus on contemporary theatre, dance and performance.

Sally is an award-winning writer, director, dramaturg, and producer based in pataway/Burnie in Lutruwita/Tasmania & Perth in Western Australia.

Sally has created and presented works for companies inc:Black Swan Theatre Company, Perth Theatre Company, Yirra Yaakin Theatre Company, Malthouse Theatre, Spare Parts Puppet Theatre, Deckchair Theatre, The Flying Fruitfly Circus, The National Institute of Circus Arts, Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts, Performing Lines, Sydney Theatre Company, Belvoir, STRUT(National Choreographic Centre) WAAPA and NAISDA, with productions awarded Helpmann, Green Room, Blue Room, PWA Awards, Ausdance WA Awards & Dance Australia Critics Choice.

Sally has developed, produced over 30 original works through her independent project companies Steamworks Arts and MAXIMA Circus, touring work regionally,nationally, and internationally including producing & presenting work for Perth, Melbourne, Sydney, OzAsia Festivals, Beijing Dance Festival & Shanghai International Arts Festival.

Sally has received a Creative Arts fellowship from WA Dept of Arts, Australia Council grants in cultural skills development and dramaturgy, is an Asialink alumni and Australia Council Arts Leaders graduate. She has worked across Australia including in WA, NSW, SA, NT, TAS and Victoria, and is passionate about working with regional communities.

Successes include: the four year dance exchange & collaboration 歸屬GUI SHU (Aust/Taiwan)Performing Lines WA), award winning dance theatre work JULIA (STCWA 2021, Sydney Dance Company, InDance, WA regional tour 2022, ISPA 2024), International digital dance collaboration Feminism Has No Borders (Perth Festival), Lucy & The Lost Boys, Rhapsody & Eclipse (NICA commissions). She has directed/ produced dance video works exhibiting films nationally & internationally in Australia, Taiwan, Hong Kong & Iceland.

Sally creates and produces challenging and relevant works that combine contemporary ideas with a powerful theatricality. She is passionate about breaking down boundaries between different art forms exploring and developing innovative approaches and performance languages in the creation of new work.

In TAS Sally was most recently the Executive Producer of the Ten Days on the Island Festival(2022-25), producing two festivals with Dr Lindy Hume AM and Marnie Karmelita. She has been a mentor for Tarraleah artist residency (PLTAS) initiated the inaugural Producer’s Bootcamp and exhibited her own video work at Rosny Arts Centre Gallery as part of The Saltmarsh Project (2025). TROPHY is her newest project, a co-creation with Natalie Allen and selected for RAWspace 2025, and LOFT (ADT) development programs.
